Layers of memory

About the memory of the Jewish people from East Prussia and Pomerania

On the map of our country there are many towns and cities that were important centers of Jewish life.

The memory of the Jewish population of East Prussia and Pomerania, despite the great work put in by scholars and local social activists, is practically non-existent in the general consciousness of Poles. Jews have disappeared both from the social landscape and from historical consciousness. The first disappearance took place during Kristallnacht, the second after the end of World War II. It is a neglected, absent topic, and there are few activities commemorating the communities living in the areas that were part of Germany before World War II. Our sensibility says that they too deserve a bow and a symbolic reminder. It will also allow us to show the Haskalah that dominated the German Jewish community, the philosophy and history behind it, and the Jews, different in almost every aspect, except religion, from those in Eastern and Central Poland. We would also like to show the world in which East Prussian Jews lived: the world of the magnificent palaces of the East Prussian aristocracy, and the lives of ordinary Germans from the area. Tell about the cities and towns where they lived together with other nations: Poles, Jews, Mazurians, Warmians, Lithuanians, Roma. And after the war, in Operation Vistula, many Greek Catholics and Orthodox were resettled in the area. We want to remember them, too.

The music, image, word, texture is meant to be a symbolic tribute to Poles, Jews, Germans, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Lemkos, Boykos and all the nations that lived in these parts. Catholics, Protestants, Old Believers, Orthodox, Polish Brethren, Uniates and believers in no God.

Come with us on this journey, look under your feet, be attentive.
